What Is a Kamarband? Types of Waist Chains and How to Wear One
A kamarband is a waist ornament worn over a saree or lehenga, usually as a chain, panel or belt with hanging ornaments. Also called kardhani or kamar chain in Hindi, it sits at the natural waist and anchors the drape. Types range from heavy bridal belts to a single minimal strand, and the right choice depends on the outfit and how you plan to wear it.
What a kamarband is
Kamar means waist in Hindi and Urdu, and band means band or strap, so a kamarband is literally a waistband. It is worn at the waist over a saree or lehenga. The same ornament appears under different names across India: kardhani or kamar chain in Hindi, and oddiyanam in Tamil or vaddanam in Telugu for the heavy South Indian bridal belt. Most pieces are made of linked chains, panels or bead strands, and some carry small ghungroo bells.
Types of waist chains
| Type | What it is | Usually worn with |
|---|---|---|
| Bridal or heavy kamarband | A wide belt of panels, links or ghungroo bells for weddings and festive days | Saree or lehenga |
| Minimal waist chain | A single strand that sits neatly at the waist for everyday wear | Saree, kurta or lehenga |
| Hip chain | A strand worn lower, on the hips, often with a bead design | Lehenga or long skirt |
| Belly chain | A fine chain worn lower on the skin, below the navel, without going through a piercing | Crop top, lehenga or bare |
Among anokhi's current styles, the heavy option is the Oxidised Silver Kamarband · Ghungroo Waist Chain at ₹11,298. The double-layer belly chain is the 925 Silver Belly Chain · Double-Layered at ₹8,498. For a bead hip chain, choose the 925 Silver Hip Chain · Simple Bead Strand at ₹5,198. For a light everyday strand, the 925 Silver Waist Chain · Minimal Single Strand is ₹6,598.
A thinner waist chain is worn by babies and by many men: the molathadu (its Telugu name), called araignan kodi in Tamil and aranjanam in Malayalam. Our molathadu guide covers it in detail.
How to wear a kamarband with a saree or lehenga
- 1Drape the saree first
Finish the pleats and set the pallu as you normally would. The kamarband goes on top of the finished drape, not underneath it.
- 2Place it at the natural waist
Fasten it at the natural waist, the narrowest point above the hip, so it sits over the pleats.
- 3Set the height
A lower-cut chain sits on the hip, while a wider bridal belt sits at the waist. Check from the side in a mirror before you move on.
- 4Use the waistband with a lehenga
With a lehenga, fasten it at the waistband of the skirt, not higher. The choli should not cover it.
- 5Check how it sits when you move
Sit, bend and turn once. The chain should lie flat and not slide down or twist at the back.
Sizing a kamarband
| Measure | Around the place the kamarband will sit, using a soft tape |
| Add ease | A little room so the chain lies flat and does not pull when you sit |
| Over a petticoat | Allow up to two inches more than your bare-waist measurement |
| With a lehenga | Measure at the waistband of the skirt you will wear |
If you are between two lengths, choose the longer one, since a chain that is too tight is harder to wear comfortably over a saree.
Silver, German silver and gold
| Material | Silver content | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 925 sterling silver | 92.5% silver | Has silver value. This is the only metal anokhi sells |
| German silver | No silver | An alloy of nickel, copper and zinc. It can look similar at a glance but has no silver value |
| Solid gold | Gold alloy | Not sold by anokhi. Gold has its own hallmarking, including HUID |
Oxidised is a finish, not a different metal. It is a darkened surface treatment that settles into the recesses of a design and makes the pattern stand out. Silver hallmarking in India is voluntary (IS 2112), so ask the seller what the 925 mark is based on before you buy.
Care and the piercing question
Store the kamarband dry and in a pouch, away from perfume and sprays. Wipe it after wearing, especially after a long day in heat. Take it off before bathing or swimming. The full routine is in the silver care guide.
Belly chains and waist chains are worn on the skin, and they are not navel jewellery. anokhi does not make piercing jewellery, and sterling silver is not a suitable metal for a navel piercing. If you have a piercing, use jewellery made for that purpose.

What is a kamarband?
A kamarband is a waist ornament worn over a saree or lehenga, usually as a chain or belt with links, panels or hanging ornaments. It is also called kardhani or kamar chain in Hindi. Heavy South Indian bridal versions are known as oddiyanam in Tamil and vaddanam in Telugu.
Is a kamarband the same as a waist chain?
They overlap. Waist chain is the everyday term for a light strand, while kamarband often refers to a belt-style piece worn with traditional dress. Both sit at the waist and can be worn over a saree or lehenga.
How do you wear a kamarband with a saree?
Drape the saree and set the pleats first, then fasten the kamarband over the pleats at your natural waist. Check from the side that it sits level and does not slip when you move. With a lehenga, wear it at the skirt's waistband.
What size kamarband should I buy?
Measure around the place where you plan to wear it, and add a little ease so the chain lies flat. If you will wear it over a petticoat, allow up to two inches more. If you are between two lengths, choose the longer one.
Is a German silver kamarband the same as silver?
No. German silver is an alloy of nickel, copper and zinc and contains no silver, even though it can look similar. Sterling silver marked 925 is 92.5 percent silver. anokhi sells only 925 sterling silver.
Can a belly chain be worn with a navel piercing?
anokhi does not make piercing jewellery, and sterling silver is not a suitable metal for a navel piercing. Belly chains are worn on the skin, so they are a separate choice from navel jewellery.
Does oxidised silver wear off?
Oxidised silver is a darkened surface finish, so it can wear with handling and cleaning. Wipe it dry after wearing and store it in a pouch to slow the change. The care guide has the full routine.
