925 Sterling vs Gold-Plated Silver: Which Should You Buy?
925 sterling silver is solid metal that is 92.5% pure silver throughout. Gold-plated silver is 925 silver with a thin layer of gold bonded on top for a gold look at a silver price. Both are real silver underneath — the difference is the surface, the look, and how you care for it.
What 925 and gold-plated silver actually mean
"925" means sterling silver — an alloy that is 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% other metals for strength. It is the international standard for fine silver jewellery and is what the BIS hallmark on silver certifies.
Gold-plated silver (often called gold vermeil when the plating is thick 18k gold over sterling) is the same 925 silver base with a micro-thin gold layer bonded on top. You get the warmth of gold at a fraction of solid-gold cost, and it is still real silver underneath.

Which should you choose?
Choose plain 925 (ideally with an anti-tarnish rhodium finish) if you want low-maintenance everyday jewellery that keeps its colour for years. Choose gold-plated 925 if you love a gold look but not the gold price — just wipe it dry, avoid perfume and water on it, and expect to re-plate occasionally. Either way, insist on a 925 hallmark so you know the base is genuine sterling silver.

Is gold-plated silver real silver?

Does gold plating on silver wear off?
